Kobe tops LeBron

Who is the most popular player in the NBA today? If you thought LeBron James then think again because the latest jersey sales are in and for the second straight season Kobe Bryant’s number 24 jersey has sold the most products.

The rankings are based on sales at the NBA Store in New York City and NBAStore.com since the start of the 2009-10 NBA season.

LeBron retains his spot at No.2 while Dwight Howard moves into the top five for the first time at No.3. Derrick Rose also appears on the list in just his second season as an NBA player, claiming the fourth spot. Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade rounds out the top five.

Current NBA champions the LA Lakers took top spot in the team merchandise rankings, followed by the Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers, who moved up one place from fourth.

Kryptonate to defend Dunk title

New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson will be looking to create history by winning his third NBA Slam Dunk contest title at this year’s All-Star weekend.

It will be the fourth time the 5ft 10in guard from Seattle will have participated in the contest but has admitted that he had his doubts about appearing for a fourth time.

“The NBA, they asked me: ‘Do you want to do it?’ And at first I wasn’t sure. This is my fourth time doing it, so I know people probably get sick of seeing me dunk, but like I said, the champion’s got to go back,” Robinson said after New York’s victory over the Detroit Pistons.

“And I guess, hopefully, I mean if I don’t win it, it’ll be good because I don’t want to go back no more. But if I do [win], and they want me to go back again, I guess so. Keep going until I lose,” he added.

One person who will not be appearing in the dunk contest is LeBron James.

During last year’s competition James had said he would consider participating but when the line-up for the event was announced his name was not on the list.

“Right now I’m preliminarily putting my name in the 2010 contest Saturday night. LeBron James is saying in 2010, in Dallas Stadium, [preliminarily] he will compete,” James said at the 2009 dunk event.

Robinson will appear instead next to Charlotte Bobcats’ Gerald Wallace, LA Lakers’ Shannon Brown and the winner of a dunk-in between LA Clippers’ Eric Gordon and Toronto Raptors’ DeMar DeRozan, it was announced on Monday.

Last year Robinson beat Dwight Howard to the title after dressing up as kryptonite and jumping over the 6ft 11in centre who was dressed up as Superman.

NBA rumours

According to a league source the Utah Jazz have made everyone on their roster available for trade apart from Deron Williams after falling to 18-16 on the season and the ninth seed, one place from the play-offs.

Carlos Boozer is likely to be the main player to be shopped after he publically declared he would not be re-signing with the Jazz when his contract runs out this year. Boozer will make $12.6million this year and with his contract expiring has attracted some interest from around the league.

Andrei Kirilenko is another player the Jazz are trying to move in a bid to avoid a substantial luxury tax bill. The Russian will make $16.4million this year and will be owed $17.8million next season. His lucrative contract is the major blocking stone to any trade and it is unlikely any team will be willing to take the contract on unless Utah are willing to eat some of the contract.

The Washington Wizards have openly admitted that they are willing to listen to offers for forward Caron Butler and one team being mentioned around the league is the Chicago Bulls. But the rumours seem to be just that as the Bulls already have players for Butler’s position. Luol Deng is locked up for the future and is still owed over $50million. And if the Bulls were thinking of playing Butler at shooting guard they already have John Salmons who plays at the two, and Butler has played his whole career at small forward so playing him as a shooting guard could cause some problems.

The Memphis Grizzlies are intent on adding some scoring off the bench with Travis Outlaw being their main target. But the Portland Trailblazers have rebuffed Memphis twice telling them they have no interest in the two first round picks they are offering in exchange.

The Grizz have also expressed interest in Nate Robinson according to reports but were also turned away by the New York Knicks. Robinson, who scored 41 points on his return from missing the whole of November after falling out with head coach Mike D’Antoni, would provide the Grizzlies with instant offense but Grizzlies general manager refused to confirm any deals.

“We would like to add to our offensive firepower off the bench but we want to do so on our terms, we don’t want to complicate our long-term team salary obligations and potentially detract from our ability to sign Rudy Gay,” Chris Wallace said.
